Jim Zorn is Named New Redskins Head Coach

In an odd twist to the Redskins Head Coaching story, Jim Zorn will be announced as Head Coach on Sunday.

I don't know much about Zorn other than him being the first ever Seattle Seahawk quarterback, but I know one thing on his resume that stands out. He's not Jim Fassel. I'm sure we'll find out more about Zorn in the coming days.

This shows a new level of disrespect by Snyder. How many candidates must feel used and abused by the "formal process" that the Redskins have used? In most normal situations the hiring manager knows whether this is the person or not and can pare the potential group of candidates down to two and make a decision if it hasn't already become clear. To continue to parade potential hopefuls through Redskins park when no one seemed to be sure of anything seemed rather cruel. Isn't there someone that had an opinion that could say we don't need to bring any one of these candidates back again that they've learned what they needed to learn and can move on?

Is there no shame or honor in having the decency and integrity to tell a candidate they're no longer in the running for the position? After all no other NFL team is hiring a head coach, so the Redskins have all the candidates to themselves. We know Williams, Fassel, and Meeks all met several times with the Redskins. Fassel has now been spurned by the Redskins twice. He even green lighted the offensive coordinator that actually became the head coach. It even appears that a stall tactic was even used with Fassel to enable the hiring of Zorn.

Is there any wonder why it took four years for Gibbs to bring stability and an air of honesty with "Team First" mentality and winning attitude when you can look at all the secrecy, rumors, and behind closed doors type meetings?

What all Redskins fans should realize is that through the so called formal and thorough interview process that without Gibbs there's no clear decision makers that are great experts at making the correct decision. It appears clearer through this process that there was more indecision before finally arriving at a choice of fan backlash with a re-tread in Fassel or to go to uncharted territory? The later again showed indecision at the top level as nowhere in the previous round of interviews had a non coordinator even been rumored about as a candidate of possible interest.

How can a thorough process be something that seems to be arrived at in a matter of a few days when even the thought was so new and fresh in everyone's mind? How do Redskins fans know that there isn't an even better candidate in the NFL as a position coach when no one else was even considered? Would this be considered thorough or not? The only saving grace is that it doesn’t appear that Gibbs disapproves of the choice.

I'm surprised by your reaction. As you recall, only a couple of weeks ago, your reaction to my suggestions to changes in FFB rules essentially said if someone's going to make such trades, then tough for them. Granted, you did say to me that you were joking.

Aside from that, I'll say this. Fassel, Meeks, and Williams could have all interviewed in other places. Look at each candidate individually...

Fassel - I don't think he had another team interested in him. So he was stuck and had to stick it out.

Meeks - Maybe he was a serious candidate, but also a Rooney rule qualification. He certainly could have interviewed other places, if there was interested.

Williams - In hindsight, not being named HC after the first interview should have been a sign. Of course, he had to play the fine line, in case Snyder was really just trying to be as thourough at possible.

In the end, again, every candidate could have interviewed at other places. Even if Snyder told them, we'll get back to you in a week, or in the case of Fassel, we'll decide after the Superbowl, those are clear signs the decision was not done and they could each not be hired.

I like the idea of getting some one who has not been head coach before. Not sure that Zorn is better than Meeks though.

He is pretty old to have not been seriously considered for a coordinator or head coach sooner.

I wonder if he will have much input into who is hired to be the offensive coordinator. If he has little, I would say he has no chance of success. The head coach needs to be in charge for the other coaches and players to really respect him.

I'd agree with you RCL. My understanding is that he'll select his cooridanator within the next few weeks.
