Yankee Stadium

Yankee Ticket.jpgThis past Saturday was the draft for one of our fantasy football leagues. Q, The Sports Freak, Stu, and myself made the trek up to New York City to meet up with Bob and another friend of ours. What better to do on draft weekend than to go to Yankee Stadium? OK, the Redskins were in town against Favre and the Jets (I nearly said Bennie & the Jets!). But it was only pre-season. We had live, real baseball going on in the Bronx. Against the Kansas City Royals. OK, maybe I'm not making a great case. Oh yeah, it's the final season of Yankee Stadium. There, that was a good reason.

With our luck, we had Sidney Ponson starting for the Yankees. Ahh the Prince of Aruba, ex-Oriole when even Q was still paying attention to baseball. Fond memories of watching him blow game after game. He apparently realized there were a few ex-Orioles fans in the stands, as he decided to revert to "Oriole Ponson". Yet the Royals only managed to pull 2 runs out of him. Of course, the Yankees weren't better for the first few innings, leaving players stranded for most innings including at least one with bases loaded. Finally in the seventh, the Yankees broke through for 2 runs, eventually winning it in the 13th.

As to the stadium, this was my first and probably last trip to Yankee Stadium. On the ground level, the concession areas reminded me Jack Murphy/Qualcomm, the old San Diego Padres facility. Had a very "indoor" feel and seemed like they were set back from the stands.

Up in the Tier section, where our seats were, it was interesting to see that the view was nearly identical to that of Shea Stadium, during The Sports Freak and my visit to that baseball venue. We were behind home plate at Shea, but in Yankee Stadium, we were on the first base side, about half way into right field. There was the opening in the area, so we could see "New Yankee Stadium", just like at Shea with Citi Field.

As started in the Shea posting, here are my rankings for baseball stadiums, now with Yankee Stadium inserted.

Old School - 1: Fenway, 2: Yankee Stadium 3: Shea, 4 & 5: (tie) RFK and Qualcomm
Modern: AT&T Park (SF Giants), 2: Camden Yards, 3: Nationals Park. Waiting on Nationals Park to "settle".

Sorry Bob, still grouping Shea and Fenway in "Old School". When I finally get around to other stadiums, maybe I'll create a "Middle Class" version to dump Shea in.

You have Fenway ahead of Yankee stadium? That's sacrilege.

Sorry, that's just how I see it. If it makes you feel any better, it's close.

Yankee stadium was better before the renovations in the 1970s (stadium was run down but configuration of field was unique)

Who's Stu?

Stu is a man's man. He hunts grizzly bears and wild boar in the summer and winters in the Antarctic. You don't want to mess with Stu. Especially in fantasy football.

(BMT) LMAO

BJ - I'll give you some hints:

1. Stu hosted our keeper fantasy football league a few years back.

2. You swam in his pool during that draft.

3. You knocked him out in poker this past weekend.

I think that Stu shoulf rock the wide-tab collars and become Disco Stu for a while. Maybe a nice gold medallion and some visible chest hair. You know, make the ladies swoon.

Thankfully, we don't have boar down here in the South. Would hate to cross Stu's path. :o)
