ESPN Zone (DC) Closes Doors to Sports Fans

The ESPN Zone seems like a great place to go to watch a sporting event or even kill some time waiting for an event. The later was what transpired this past Saturday night. Bruce Campbell was premiering his new movie at the Landmark Theater downtown Bruce Campbell.

Bruce was scheduled to talk before the movie and take Q&A afterwards for the 7 & 10 shows. The Landmark's website was down and their phone number wouldn't connect you to a live operator. After traveling via a weekend metro schedule, Big Money Tony and I arrived on the scene only to find the show sold out. We decided to bite the bullet and catch Bruce before the midnight show without the Q&A after the show because Bruce likes his sleep.

Management didn't seem to care that the website was down. Another customer could be over heard telling a friend that he bought tickets weeks ago only to be told the earlier show was sold out. We then headed over to the ESPN Zone to catch some college football games. The place was pretty dead. After a while without the ESPN Zone adjusting the channels or sound we decided to go upstairs to catch the Troy/LSU and BC/FlaSt games and then it happened. The TV's just shut down. Another patron yelled out, what kind of ******* bar closes at 11 PM?!" Was this the normal schedule on a Sat. night in DC or the manager shutting down early? How could this be without even a warning or even before the games were over to be told it was closing time. Next time we want to watch some games, we won't be heading to the ESPN Zone.

And for all the Bruce Campbell fans out there, Bruce seemed really down to earth and laid back. Before the movie he asked what were our expectations of "My Name is Bruce" to which someone from the audience replied "rock bottom!" Bruce thought that was good as the movie only cost a few hundred thousand to make (with his own money). The movie supposedly mirrored the life of the real Bruce Campbell as B list movie actor drawn into helping a small town rid itself of a Chinese God of War. It provided several classic lines and much insight into the life of Campbell as he wrote the movie too. The words he spoke seemed effortless as if that was the laid back Bruce himself. For those not in attendance, Bruce was just as entertaining in person as his persona on the screen.
