Redskins Make Room for Hall By Cutting Torrence

The Redskins officially signed DeAngelo Hall yesterday prompting the team to make a roster move. Leigh Torrence a stalwart nickel corner back, special teams standout, and spot duty starter was cut to make room for the arrival of Hall. At 26 and with two seasons under his belt in the burgundy and gold, Torrence's future seemed bright with the team. He was both a great team player in the locker room and also cap friendly.

In the first time in a long time, a roster spot decision to determine the makeup of the team and this close to the playoffs fell on Vinny. It can only be assumed that Kelly will not be put on IR or the move to cut Torrence wouldn't have been made. Why wasn't Tryon moved to the practice squad if he cleared waivers especially if he isn't ready to fill a nickel back role? With so many teams looking for quality depth in the secondary it seemed odd that Torrence was waived.

The back seven of the defense has been riddled with injuries throughout the season and was carrying the defense most of the year. With so many players looking to the bye week to recover from injuries, where else could the Redskins turn to adjust the roster? The front four has done little to help the back seven and certainly hasn't been as hobbled by injury since the pre-season. Where has Erasmus James been hiding? If he's recovered from injury and ready to play to regain his potential and form then why isn't he in the game in passing situations? If he's still recovering from injury why not place him on IR and if it looks doubtful that he'll play or regain his form then why not release him. At this point the more valuable player appeared to be Torrence.

I think this should be logged as evidence for the case against Vinny Cerrato. This case alone does not hold much water, but his history with the team since this pre-season alone could convict him of being a lousy personnel man.

- With holes at many spots, the top three draft picks were 2 wide receivers and a catching tight end. The offensive line is old and short on depth. While we seemed to have a great secondary, Springs is constantly injured and Rogers has hands of stone. So far the wide receivers have contributed little and the TE needs to find minutes after Cooley gets his.

- Torrence's release might be one of those things that only the team knows what's going on. Kelly maybe should be on the IR. We've got other players who could be released as well, but Torrence had to go? Hall is an upgrade, but I think we could use Torrence in the secondary. Again, it's not a terrible move, but I'm concerned with Cerrato's first solo draft and his previous history.

About this previous history. Those that know me know I've never been a fan of Vinny's. I also was not a fan of Marty Schottenheimer's. Didn't care for his attitude, his schemes, his coaching abilities. But one thing I agreed whole-heartily with Marty on was when he fired Vinny. Snyder decided to bring him back when Gibbs returned and I think that's because Gibbs is kind of a pushover. Besides it was the owner's money. Some time ago, I heard on a broadcast that more than one un-named NFL front office person said that if Snyder wasn't the owner, Vinny wouldn't have a job in the NFL. That's saying something.
