Nationals Lose Teixeira Sweepstakes: Yankees Add Teixeira to Their Stocking Stuffer

| No TrackBacks

The Yankees caught many off guard by making an initial offer and quietly sat back to then walk away at the end with the most prized free agent this off season. Teixeira is in the prime of his career. After the Angels pulled out of the bidding war and the Orioles fell behind most speculated that the Red Sox had the inside track over the Nationals with the Yankees a mere spectator. What does such high price spending leave for the rest of the league?

The Yankees now have the four of the highest contracts in baseball. Flushed with an influx of revenue due to the new stadium, the Yankees went out and completely overhauled their roster nullifying any gains the Red Sox have made over the years. Is there any franchise in MLB that can compare with the Yankees in terms of spending? When the Red Sox can't even compete with New York, who's left to keep the Yankees honest? ESPN.

There's nothing wrong with spending when you have the money especially when it's permitted within the rules, but at what point does the spending become too much as in the free agent signings by the Yankees and more notably Sabathia. Didn't he want to play on the west coast? How much more money was leveled on him? Wouldn't this be more of a tactic a team with a poor record look to use to acquire a franchise changing player? New York had to throw more money at players to sign them. The proud tradition of becoming a Yankee used to be enough with a nice contract to entice someone to sign. Will a change in the luxury tax or salary cap come to baseball of as a result of the gluttony of offseason signings?

It's the perception of the rest of the league and MLB fans that could ultimately be the Yankees problem in the future as they signed three of the top free agents at such exorbitant salaries all in the same offseason. Will the quick fix plan to be back on top in the AL East ultimately pave a road for future failures of the Yankees? It remains to be seen. If MLB takes a hard stance due to the level of high stakes contract signings by the Yankees, New York could find themselves playing small ball and playing in a more level playing field. The collective bargaining agreement comes up again in 2011 MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement.
