Redskins Honor Sean Taylor
On Sunday, the Redskins honored Sean Taylor by putting him in the Ring of Fame. Former NBC4 sports anchor, George Michael hosted the ceremony at Fedex Field prior to the sloppy game against the New York Football Giants. The day was somber and dreary because of the rain, which seemed kind of appropriate for the event. It was only about a year ago when Taylor was shot at his Florida home when intruders broke in thinking the house was empty.
It was mentioned that being put in the Ring of Fame usually meant the celebration of a great Redskins career. As Michael said, this was was different. Taylor was being honored for the career that could have been.
Also in attendance were Taylor's family including his mother and father, fiance and young daughter. His father Pedro said a few words to us in the crowd. Then the current Redskins took the field with Clinton Portis coming out last waving a #21 banner. When the cover finally came off Taylor's name in the ring, the crowd roared. Too bad that was the last time on Sunday we had anything to cheer about.
In the game, the Redskins were the Redskins we've seen in recent weeks. Fairly solid defense and a whole lot of nothing on offense. Portis and Ladell Betts were held in check. While Jason Campbell took a few shots down the field, only one long pass was completed. The Sports Freak said it in his pre-game analysis and I said it last week after they took a win over Seattle...the Redskins had to move the ball efficiently.
The Giants proved why they are the best team in the NFC and arguably the best team in the NFL. Holding Portis to less than a 100 yards was one of the keys as many of the Redskins wins were predicated on him breaking that barrier. But even more so was the pressure they put on the offensive line and Campbell. With little time, Campbell rushed passes before the plays could fully develop.
The Redskins now head up I-95 to Baltimore in the Battle of the Beltways to face the Ravens next Sunday. The key to winning the game is plain and simple. Keep the defense going, and get the offense moving. Let's hope they figure it out this coming week.
