Flipping Out:

Does anyone else find it unfair that Flip Saunders gets relieved of his coaching duties, basically giving him an opportunity to distance himself from a joke of a team and a franchise, while we're left to wallow in another lost season and watch a team of knuckle heads play what they think is basketball, but in reality is really some jumbled mess of street ball mixed with rec center pick up? Is it fair that Ernie Grunfield, possibly the worst GM in the history of the world, still has a job? Does anyone else pine for the days of the Big Three, a time when no defense was played, a time when 'Dagger' calls rained down from on high, a time when the Wiz were just a few pieces away?

Those memories weren't very long ago and even though the Wizards organization would like you to act as if you had your mind erased (Men in Black Style), those were much better days. Just to re-cap, the Wiz, were close, real close, close enough to trade a Ricky Rubio draft spot to the T-Wolves for Mike Miller and Randy Foye. Then Gil lost his cool and started threatening to cap a fool and all the good will, the game winners, the back to back to back to back playoff appearances, it was all gone, poof!

Here we stand January 25, 2012, Flip Saunders, the one-time answer to solving the Wizards post-season iniquities; the man that replaced a pretty successful Eddie Jordan is gone. Saunders deserved better, and by that I mean talent-wise. It was unfair that he had to deal with the Gilbert Arenas fiasco and the blowing up of the big three. It wasn't a good fit to have him saddled with such a young, ignorant team, but it doesn't totally excuse his 51-130 record with the team. Saunders 'pedigree' means he should have done something, he needed to change his coaching style to fit his awful situation, but he didn't. He could have played more young guys, but instead kept putting that rotting corpse Rashard Lewis in the starting five each night. How will we remember Flip? Somewhere close to how the Wizards organization want us to remember the 'Big 3' and the 'Hibachi'......IT NEVER HAPPENED!!

With all that being said, some days feel different than others, but everyday that Ernie Grunfeld remains GM of the Washington Wizards feels like I'm taking CRAZY PILLS! Straight up, he should have been fired when he made that awful Mike Miller/Randy Foye trade and no doubt when they blew up the big three. This is a plea to Teddy, AMNESTY CORPSE LEWIS, TRADE BLACTCHE OR CUT HIM AND PLEASE FIRE GRUNFELD!!!

It's that time again:

Today, much like every other Maryland vs. Duke day, I took to YouTube to watch my favorite videos. I started with an appetizer of Juan Dixon going off against Duke at Cameron indoor from 2001 on Shane Battier's senior night. Then moved on to a salad course of Maryland cult favorite Dave Neal setting an amazing pick on poor little Nolan Smith. For the dinner it was a main course filled with a combo of Jordan Williams dunking on John Scheyer and an epic Steve Blake steal from Jay Williams, you know the one I'm talking about. After I was stuffed to the brim with poorly constructed food puns, I capped off the night with a desert fit for a king, watching Maryland upset Duke in the ACC tournament.

Ah, Maryland vs. Duke, nothing better. Take all your Big East, Big Ten, and Big 12 rivalries and shove them. This is passion personified; this is Cool (MD) vs. Same Lame White Guy (Duke).

Tonight will be special regardless of the outcome, since tonight is the night that Maryland renames the Comcast Center floor after legendary coach Gary Williams. Let's hope the Terps christen the floor properly.

Duke is coming off last second loss to FSU this past weekend and Maryland is currently sporting a two game losing streak. Duke is the heavy favorite, but you can never count the turtles out. The Terps will need a big game from Stoglin, Pe'Shon and Mosley if they have any chance of staying in the ball game. Alex Len is set to play after spraining an ankle against Temple. Nothing would be better than Len plowing down the lane and jamming one home in his first taste of the rivalry.

Here is to hoping tonight's game gives me another option in the YouTube buffet of Maryland triumphs over Duke.

Welcome to the first installment of 'Pick n Pop,' a weekly/bi-weekly look at all things hardwood! A back-door pass of basketball coverage spanning, local NBA, College and other NBA news all brought to yours truly by Dr. Gonzo and The DC Sports Page. Lace up your sneaks, pound the floor and get ready for some up-tempo full court trapping coverage of the Wiz, Terps and everything else NBA.

Opening tip: The Wizards began their 66-game season this past Monday with a new red, white and blue jerseys and a brand new motto 'New Traditions.' Only someone forgot to tell the team that they had changed their motto, instead the Wiz blew a 21 point lead and fell to the underwhelming New Jersey Nets 90-84.

I was in attendance for this game and was hyped up after having a couple happy hour beers and half price apps at Bar Louie. From my perch in the 400 section, I had a great view spanning the entire stadium. After a spirited player introduction I was ready to start the season, ready for something fresh, ready for something to cheer about, and then it happened. Andre Blatche grabbed the mic before tip-off and thanked the fans in attendance and said that he was the Wizards new captain. WHAT? That was no typo. Is model citizen Andre Blatche is finally getting the respect he deserves?

After the Wiz choked away a sure thing, Blatche showed his real colors and blamed everyone but himself complaining about the play calling and the fact that he isn't getting the ball on the block enough. Great, one game in, already one collapse and the so-called 'Captain' was already creating problems. Are we in the twilight zone here? Can we just bring Gil back; at least he made game-winners.

John Wall must have been relived that Blatche spouted off. If not most of the focus would have been on the poor defense Wall played against Derron Williams and his decision to drive on four Nets in the final minute instead of feeding a wide-open Jordan Crawford for a three. Even more concerning is the fact that this Wizards team appear to have no one to go to when they needed any easy basket, Nick Young made some nice shots down the stretch, but you never felt like he could take over. Crowd favorite Kris Humphries, made matters worse by embarrassing the Wizards front court while registering 21 points and a game high 16 rebounds.

It seems that for now we're looking at the same ole same ole in Chinatown!

The Wizards get a chance to make good on their 'New Traditions' motto tonight as they take on the Hawks in Atlanta. Tip-off 7:30.

Here to 'Len' a helping hand: I have to admit, when I saw this seasons Terrapins squad play Alabama way back in November, I was thinking maybe this team can win 10-15 games, may be. Now the Terps sit at 7-3 with 3 more non-conference games before ACC play starts and tonight we finally get to see the debut of Alex Len.

Len was forced to sit out for the first 10 games of the season and should give the Terps size, depth and athleticism in the post. Something they are desperate for. The Len debut is must watch for all Terps fans, this could be the first look at a possible difference maker that could help this team make a serious push for the tournament. No not the NIT either, the big dance. Whoa, before I get ahead of myself, tonight the Terps must take care of Albany.

Lens return marks the second such return in the past two games. In Maryland's last victory over Radford, Pe'Shon Howard made his season debut after breaking his foot in October. Howard wasn't in tip-top shape, but he helped make a difference. With Howard and Len returning, the Terps are suddenly a much deeper team.

Terps fans rejoice, no one thinks they're any good and that's how Gary would have like it. Tip-off 8:00 pm Comcast Center.

Welcome Back, Welcome Back, Welcome Back: You can't tell, but right now I'm singing the 'Welcome Back Cotter' song in my head. I was like a little kid on Christmas, I couldn't sleep, all I could think about was getting to that tree and unwrapping the best gifts of them all, NBA basketball.

It was a glorious day of food, family, presents and hoops. The Knicks v. Celtics started us off with a classic, and only a stellar performance by the Melo man could hold off the aging, but competitive Celts. Next we were treated to a finals rematch, except no one told Dallas; they must have still been on the parade route as the Heat gave them a spanking. Kobe Bryant and the whitest Lakers team ever, eat your heart out Kurt Rambis, lost on a last second shot by Derrick Rose and the Bulls and Dwight Howard continued to suck on Christmas as the Thunder, donkey-punched the Magic in to submission.

Then came the night-cap, featuring the most anticipated game of the day, The Clippers vs. The Golden State Warriors, man that still feels so weird to write, but it was the truth. Chris Paul and the newly christened 'Lob-City' Clips disposed of the Warriors, but gave us few highlight reel dunks. I can only remember seeing two dunks worth getting up for, oh and a ridiculous over the basket shot by Caron Butler.

All in all it was a big win for the NBA. Did they deserve it for making us sit through the lockout? Hell no! Do I care? Hell no! Basketball is back and all is right with the world.

That's it and that's all........

Three days and counting until the best Christmas present of all time!! No it's not a cabbage patch doll, not a tickle-me-Elmo, no Beanie Babies and not even a Furby. We're getting a giant package filled with a day of jam-packed NBA action. The NBA is back baby, its back! In the immortal words of Steve Buckhantz, 'How do you like that?"
Well Buck, I LOVE IT!

To jump start the season, I've decided to take a different approach to a season preview. I'm getting out ahead of ESPN and all the TV pundits to answer everyone's favorite hypothetical, What if the playoffs started today? Preposterous I know, but nothing about this season is conventional so deal with it.

We'll start with the East and run down the Top Eight Teams, and a few on the-Cusp teams:
1.)	Miami - A 66 game season will really help the Heat, not to mention during the offseason they improved their bench. Battier is a solid addition, Haslem is back and healthy and LeBron has a new and improved post game, scary. The X-Factor here, will the Heat rest guys for the playoff run? If so they may swap Chicago for the two spot, but no lower.

2.)	Chicago - The Bulls made two solid moves so far, 1.) Signing Rose to an extension and 2.) The signing of Rip Hamilton. Let us not forget that Chicago was a beast of a defensive team last year, but when it came down to crunch time and they needed a basket, they had nothing. They were too easy to stop when Rose was their only option, now they have a knock down scorer with a championship pedigree.

3.)	Knicks - So the Knicks were trying to get Chris Paul, amnestied Chauncey Billups, signed Tyson Chandler and Baron Davis. Chandler will help out on defense and allow Amare to focus even less on defending the basket. The big question mark is the point guard spot. May be the New York spotlight will rejuvenate Davis, but can he last? The Knicks aren't a deep team and D'Antoni loves to run his teams in to the ground, but they do have Melo.

4.)	Indiana - This is my big surprise team of the season. The Pacers snuck in to the playoffs last year as an 8 seed and gave the Bulls fits. In the offseason they signed David West and looked poised to make the jump to actual contender. I was hesitant to pick the Knicks ahead of the Pacers, but the Pacers lack that superstar. Granger is great, but he's not Melo. Look for the Pacers to hustle hard, play smart and actually try for the entire 66 games.

5.)	Boston - Old, decaying, decrepit on life support. Not sold on this Celtics team, plus an injury to KG, Pierce or Allen could be catastrophic. The Celts lost Big Baby to Orlando, Jeff Green is out for the season with heart problems and they really have no depth at all. This could be a really long season for the Celts.

6.)	Orlando - The Magic are skating on thin ice, if Dwight does get traded at any point this season, then you can take them out of the 6 spot and put them on the couch for the playoffs.

7.)	Atlanta - The Hawks lost Crawford and replaced him with Tracy Magrady. Tisk, Tisk. Also Josh Howard is good trade bait.

8.)	Philadelphia - The Sixers made the playoffs last season and have a great young team. If Brand stays healthy, that gives the Sixers a legit post presence and Evan Turner was impressive last season as a rookie.

On the Cusp:
ALERT, ALERT, ALERT....HOMER PICK: 9.) Washington - I was at the first pre-season game and I saw the Wiz take it on the chin, and I know that Nick Young is our best scorer. Man that last part was scary to write. If Wall can improve and Javale McGee finally comes around (Contract year) may be we get in as an eight, but I doubt it.

10.) Bucks - I don't know a lot about the Bucks, but they have a great point guard in Brandon Jennings, sorry. Fear the deer?
I'm dusting off my floppy disk and taking the Oregon Trail over to the West to pick my top 8.

1.) Oklahoma City - Two words for you: Kevin Durant. Remember this shortened season will benefit young legs and the Thunder has a lot of those. The NBA is always dominated by dominant players, good news for the Thunder since they have two, but can Durant and Westbrook co-exist? If they do, this is the best team in the West.

2.) LA Clippers (Not a Typo) - We're currently living in a world that could feature a Miami vs. LA Clippers NBA finals. Go back in a time machine and let someone in the Nineties know that, they would shit themselves. The Clips added Chris Paul (Top Ten Player), Chauncey Billups (Former NBA Champ), Caron Butler (Great Knickname 'Tough Juice') and they re-signed Blake Griffins' buddy De'Andre Jordan. If the team can jell early then they could be scary good. LOB-CITY!!!

3.) Dallas - I'm so confused on how to think about this Mavs team. They relied heavily on the defensive presence of Tyson Chandler and great bench play from the spark plug J.J. Barrea to win a title. Now both are gone, and they replaced them with Odom, Delonte West and Vince Carter. I say downgrade. I like the Odom addition and he's playing with a chip on his shoulder, but rocking the ship too much could be detrimental.

4.) Memphis - Memphis gave us a memorable playoff series with the Thunder last year and even gave us a legit Grievis Vasquez siting. Marc Gasol re-signed and Rudy Gay is back and healthy. I really like this Memphis team and I really want to see them in the playoffs.

5.) San Antonio - The Spurs are old, see Boston Celtics, but they have experience. If the old dogs can hold up for the sprint, they should be rewarded with a first round playoff exit to the Grizzles.

6.) Nuggets - The Melo trade last season gave the Nuggets some good players in return. George Karl is a great coach and this Nuggets team is poised to surprise.

7.) Lakers - Old, disgruntled and injury prone. I just realized that if this scenario is plays out we could have an all LA first round match-up. That would be incredible. The Lakers got robbed by the NBA and if Kobe has any juice left his sole motivation will be destroying everyone in his path.

8.) Portland - This is just a shout out to all the hipsters in Portland, you have a decent basketball team.

On the Cusp: 9.) Suns - Nash, that's about it.

10.) Minnesota - I Kevin Love this team, and they signed J.J. Barrea and finally brought Ricky Rubio over from Spain. This team could surprise and make a push to be a 7 seed; I also love the addition of head coach Rick Adleman.

There it is, all wrapped up nice for you and placed under the tree. What has two thumbs loves the NBA and can't sleep at night due to anticipation of one of the best days of basketball in the history of the world? THIS GUY!!!

I've been called a homer, a band wagon fan and a frontrunner. And guess what? I'm all three at times. Don't get me wrong here, I would never actively route against any of my teams, but sometimes it's fun to route for a winner. In a day and age when every team from Dubai to New Mexico can be seen on the internet or tv shouldn't we be able to route for whoever, whenever? Probably not, but routing, much like this article, shouldn't make sense, it should just make you feel good.

A vast majority of the Sporting fan landscape is dotted with miserable lemmings who are forced in to an inherited fandom. Not one of choice, because like myself, most of us are born in to our rooting interests. We latch on to the team that our fathers followed or the team that we grew up around. During one of our most naïve periods of life, we make a choice or a choice is made for us and the rest is history.

Growing up, and to this day, I'm a diehard Redskins, Terps (Hoops), Wizards and DC United fan. I love the Caps, but my family wasn't a hockey family, so to claim to be a fan of the Capitals leaves me feeling a little off. Baseball was a little more difficult, my father hated the Orioles. Something to do with the Senators moving away and the Orioles being the only show in town, this somehow made him a full-fledged Orioles hater. As you may have guessed, innocent, sponge like me soaked up this hatred and wanted nothing to do with anything from Baltimore (That hatred has spawned to include the Ravens).

Left without a baseball team to root for, a young impressionable seven year old me (Imaging shorter, but same large head, and a bowl cut) did what most misguided fans do, I picked a winner! The winners at the time were the Toronto Blue Jays, and I was hooked. I watched all of their playoff games, then World Series number one. I memorized the lineup from top to bottom, I knew the pitching staff like the inside of my catcher's mitt and I was there, well on my couch anyway, when Joe Carter snuck a World Series winning homer over the left-field wall. That was me, future Red Sox fan, unaware of the fandom laws I was breaking as I ran around my living room fist pumping in stride with Joe.

After a few season of bad Toronto baseball I began to forget about my love for our neighbors to the North. So having only one other option since proximity was out, I chose to follow my father's team once again, I became a fan of Red Sox nation in 1995.
From my early days as a Blue Jay junkie, up until 2003, I started to get burnt out on the games I loved as a child. It had to do with consuming the same type of stats, seeing the same type of highlights every night and being that I was starting College at the time, I craved a new experience. Enter the 'Beautiful Game.'

I must be attracted to blue or teams from outside the USA because I was once again enthralled with a winning team in blue, but this time it was a soccer team, Chelsea FC. Over the past eight years I denounced my pledge to Chelsea FC and moved across London to my beloved Gunners of Arsenal. I also follow Ajax FC of Amsterdam. (Took a trip to Amsterdam after College, fell in love with the City)

Falling in love with sports as a child had alot to do with the unknown. I really had no grasp of the past or even what it felt like when your favorite team lost. Initially baseball, with all of its nuances and multitudes of stats, became the first sport to peek my interest. I loved studying the sports page boxscore and trying to train myself to be able to rattle off as many starting lineups as possible. As I grew, I become a football fan, then a basketball fan, each sports filling up the seasons until my fandom could span a whole year.

Early on I loved watching old NFL films shows, specifically the ones about the Superbowl. What was the AFL/NFL merger? I had to know. Who was Len Bias? Every day I tried to quench my thirst for Sports figures, Sports heroes and general knowledge of the games I loved.

Around high school I started to notice that I wasn't as interested in the past or the present for that matter. I was still supporting my teams, and with the knowledge I gained, I could even guess what play the Redskins might run (Something my father did when I would watch as a youth. I was always amazed when he would call a hold before the ref spoke or how he was dead on with his 'Play action, through to the tight-end' calls).
Basically sports had become stale. Enter Soccer.

BOOM! Like a gunshot going off, soccer had arrived. I really have no soccer memories that pre-date 2003, except that stint as a defender who picked daisies in the second grade. No to me soccer was untouched. I felt like Columbus discovering something that people had known about for years and much like Columbus I took everything that was available and tried to make it my own.

It was a carbon copy to my early days, I wanted to know everything and there was so much to know. So much so that I still can't grasp it all. The names of former greats sounded like conquering superheroes to me Cruyff, Zico, Seedorf, Zidane, Di Stefano, Maradona, who were these gods, I had to know. I went through hours and hours of YouTube highlights, I saw the 'Hand of God' and Maradona's magic run against England. I watched as Clarence Seedorf rocketed a shot from midfield and in to the back of the net with power. I studied the Cruyff turn. I learned what kit, pitch, boots and touchline meant. The rate of my consumption was done at warp speed. I read about all the World Cups, the Total Futbol Dutch became my secret crush and I bought countless soccer books, DVD's, jerseys and balls.

While still unsure about my Chelsea allegiance, I committed sports fandom sin number one, I changed teams. I can't be totally blamed for this, blame Nick Hornsby. The author of my newly christened sporting bible 'Fever Pitch,' his book spoke to me like nothing I had read before. From that day forward I was an Arsenal fan.

2003 was sort of a resonance for me, or more accurately a fan maturation process. I was no longer the little boy learning about America's Past Time, now I was filling in to a College student who was accepting of new things, who had to move out of his comfort zone, I was becoming a die-hard supporter of the World's Game.

I'm now a full-fledged Soccer-Addict. I play on multiple teams, I watch the EPL every Saturday, Sunday, sometimes Monday, I watch Champions League, I can tell you all about home and away scoring and why the MLS isn't a third as good as real professional soccer, I bemoan pre-season friendlies, and I haven't missed a single World Cup game since I popped my cherry in Germany 2006.

I've been a soccer fan for eight years now and I've never felt more at home. Allegiances sometimes spring up for no reason in particular and then they sometimes die, but feeling like you can't move on is the worst part. I still love the Redskins, even if they never learn from their mistakes, I still love the Terps, even if this is a re-build year, I still love my Sox, even if they tanked last season and I'll always love my Wizards, even if no one else does, but the best part of life is finding new things. Soccer was my new thing and now it's my everything, I sometimes wonder how my life would have been if I was a soccer fan from birth, but then I stop and think about robbing 2003 me of the joy of discovery and robbing current me of the ecstasy of a well-timed run, or a nasty upper ninety blast from outside of the box or the pageantry that is the World Cup.

I've been called a homer, a band wagon fan and a frontrunner. Who hasn't? But guess what? I'm all three at times. Don't get me wrong here, I would never actively root against any of my teams, but sometimes it's fun to root for a winner. In a day and age when every team from Dubai to New Mexico can be seen on the internet or tv shouldn't we be able to route for whoever, whenever? Probably not, but routing, much like this article, shouldn't make sense, it should just make you feel good.
